Stockholm The Water City

EU City Travel | 18th August, 2007 | Comment?

Stockholm has its name derived from the fact that the peninsula was used for freighting lumber, hundreds of years ago. Today however, the city has spread out far and deep into the mainland, and it is today a hub for finance, technology as well as medicine. With several universities at hand, regardless of the discipline a student is bound to find prominent research in his or her field.

Stockholm the water city. The Old Town
You might stumble into the old town without actually noticing at first. What gives it away are the narrow streets that tumble into each other and alleys that wind up and down between the main streets. These main streets are however not much wider, but they add some symmetry to the seemingly random street network in the old town.
All streets are crowded with small shops, several doing their best to sell souvenirs to tourists. This is definitely a place to look for last-minute gifts for the unimaginative! It also seems that the old town has attracted many restaurants and cafés and here you can find food from all corners of the world, with food from the Mediterranean region overly represented.

The Vasa Ship
Have you ever seen a real galleon? You should take a peek at the Vasa ship, ordered by the king Gustav Vasa in the 17th century. It is built in a pompous style, and the Vasa museum has several interesting items to show from the salvage of the ship. It sunk during its maiden voyage, taking most of its sailors into the depths.

For The Shopper
A shopping spree in Stockholm goes without saying. The Swedes are known for their diverse chains of stores and most vendors with internationally famous names, are represented by affiliate stores in Stockholm. With prices being rather high, it takes some consideration before piling up all that interesting merchandise you want. After all, the stores are plenty and it takes at least two days to visit a substantial number!

Tour Boats
Throughout the year, several tour organizers take tourists around the Stockholm archipelago, presenting the view of Stockholm as a water city. No wonder the Scandinavians call Stockholm the Venice of the North. The tour boats depart several times per hour, so don’t rush yourself through the old town to catch the next boat!
