In ancient times Athens was one of the most powerful city states, and still today tourists flock to the Greek capital with its vast collection of ancient monuments and buildings. Because of the tumultous history this city has, there are also several monuments dating from Byzantian and Roman times. One of the most renowned monument is the Parthenon on the Acropolis, known throughout the world as an important sign of Western civilization.
Acropolis is today the center of cultural life in Athens. This rock is located in the middle of Athens and boasts an incredible view of the city.
These facts combined has lead to the city’s status as the centre of archaeological research, with several foreign archaeological institutes represented in the city.
Theatre For The Masses And Sunday Shopping
There are no less than 148 theatres in Athens, with some dating back to ancient times and which are still used today! Some of these are open air theatres, with the most famous being the Theatre of Irodion, standing at the base of the Acropolis.

On Sundays the inhabitants visit the Monastiraki Flea Market, and the place quickly becomes crowded. Though called a flea market, there are actually many little stores offering a variety of products, from antiques to small trinkets.
The Schinias Beach
Should you feel like a little excursion away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Schinias Beach at Marathon offers just that. It has fine sand and the pine forest reaches down to the water line at some points.
With the beach being only an hour away from the city centre, it is a splendid place to go for a one-day excursion.
